You hear all the time "I lack motivation", I need to be motivated", "I need motivation to achieve my goals" etc. etc. So, what is motivation anyway? The APA dictionary defines Motivation as "the impetus that gives purpose or direction to behavior and operates in humans at a conscious or unconscious level....".
Motivation has a primary reason for getting you to do what you do to get your basic needs met. For example, "I am hungry, so I go to the refrigerator to get something to eat". Then, there is a secondary motivation which is learned and can be unlearned. This type of motivation includes things like achieving goals, obtaining power, becoming affiliated with desired social groups, curiosity for learning and exploring, aggression for control over others, and so on.
